Obnoxious Internet Commenters

About a week ago, I dugg up a story about “The 8 Most Obnoxious Internet Commentors” by Cracked.com. I had a good laugh with it, more so because I was so upset by the commenters in the Pinoy Press article Eraserheads Interview: A Mouthful From Raymund Marasigan. and the succeeding posts Carlos Conde wrote regarding the Eraserheads.

It has really gotten way out of hand. Like festering sores, the so-called Ehead internet mob started popping up one after the other…mocking me, and taunting me to write a biting remark as well. I wanted to defend Mr. Conde, because since I started blogging, I learned that before you do write about something, you need to have a full understanding of the subject matter. And I know Mr. Conde is a seasoned journalist, and not your average tabloid writer. All the commenters in all his post are just a bunch of goddamn memes! Everyone was saying the same thrash over and over again.

I had to stop reading the comments because it wasn’t healthy anymore. My husband and I followed this saga in Pinoy Press, and we were both disappointed why some people just “dont get it”. Why, for example, instead of focusing on the issue, they gang up against the writer. Instead of asking questions and finding answers on why this writer is saying these things, they resort to personally attacking him. When they read his post, they do not understand what it all means. They don’t care WHAT the issues are, but would rather dwell on WHO is to blame or send to the chopping block.

Brian Clark from copyblogger.com has this to say about online readers:

We know that people don’t read well online. They ruthlessly scan for interesting chunks of information rather than digesting the whole, and they want to be entertained in the process.

For one thing, I have to credit Mr. Conde for a really entertaining post in PinoyPress. Thanks to him, I am able to get a good understanding on how the internet culture in the Philippines work. I was entertained by the wrong spellings, the “men”(as in wow, men…sabog ito men!), the different ways these “men” try to look “macho” by swearing.

Here is one from a certain “paraluman”:

pero da way you handled this one against
a stupid
deceiptful (oh you mean deceitful) or clueless man (words are yours),

(actually Mr. Conde’s words were: Does Raymund actually believe that Philip Morris was not in it for the advertising and promotion of its product? You know what is worse than being sanctimonious? Being stupid. Or being deceitful and then passing it off as…. cluelessness?)

i cant comprehend.sayang ang 20 plus years na education ko.

di ko maintindihan (Baka kasi Ingles bok!)

goodluck.

(goodluck talaga sa kinabukasan ng Pilipinas kung lahat ng kabataan ay hindi kayang maintindihan ang mga isyu ng ating bayan)
