I was stunned by the evening news last Monday, when the reporter on TV described a massacre in the province of Maguindanao . When the images came out, I still couldn’t believe someone would do such a thing.
57 people, reporters and civilians, were killed and buried in pits dug alongside the highway near Shariff Aguak. The group was led by Genalyn Tiamzon-Mangudadatu, the wife of Buluan Vice mayor Toto Mangudadatu, who was heading out to file the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for her husband who was running for Governor of Maguindanao. Thinking they would be safe because most of them were women, and they had the media as escorts, they went ahead not knowing that some evil plan was already waiting them.
The governor of Maguindanao is Andal Ampatuan Sr. Until recently, I didn’t know how powerful his clan was in Maguindanao. My understanding is that he set his sights on passing the governor’s seat to his son. When Vice Mayor Mangudadatu announced his plan to run as governor, he immediately planned to have him eliminated. Today is Black Friday in the Philippines too. A day of mourning for the lives lost in the Maguindanao Massacre. I have little faith in our justice system and I seriously doubt something good would come out of this. It’s now day 5 since the massacre but the investigation is soooo slow. All the evidence points out to who the mastermind is. The “hatchet man” was already taken into custody, but because of the powerful ties between the current government and the monster they created, Im sure we would just get the roundabout here. To quote the news “Palace says Arroyo WONT cut ties with the Ampatuans”.
